Spooky Window/Broken Glass

I made this originally for a theme and after getting about a zillion e-mails asking how I did it I figured I would do a tutorial on it. Now keep in mind that this is only my second tutorial so please bear with me.

We will be creating something similiar to this

If you'd like to download the theme I made using this as the background click here

For this tutorial you will need:

Jasc Paint Shop Pro which you can get a free trial by clicking here
You will also need this zip file instructions are included, it will tell you where to put each file.
and Simples Offset by 3 filter you can get here

Ready? Ok lets get started!

1. Open the image included in the zip file or use your own, Add a new layer.

2. Click on Selections/Select All

3. Selections/Modify/Contract by 10 This is a personal prefrence, you can choose to make it larger or smaller depending on how big you want the window frame.

4. Selections/Invert and flood fill with white, Selections/Select none.

5. Pick up your draw tool with the following settings

If you used a different number in step 3 change this number as well.

6. Find your centers. You can do this easily by turning on your rulers and placing guides in the center. If you used the image I provided your centers will be 200 hoizontally and 150 vertically. Draw straight lines on your centers.

You should now have this

7. Pick up your Magic Wand and select your frame, Flood fill with the dirtywood fill I provided or use one of your own. (Save this selection to the alpha channel so you can use it again).

8. Add a new layer. Selections/Invert, don't worry if you unselected just hit undo or load from alpha channel. Now we are going to modify the selctions by expanding by 2. (Selections/Modify/Expand) Change to the flood fill tool and change the style to gradient. Change the gradient to the one titled Glass that was included in the zip file. You will want to change the settings to where you want the "light" coming from. I used an angle of 40, repeats 0. Select none.

9. Now you will pick up your Freehand (the little lasso) Here you will just freehand where you think the glass would be broken. I don't have a set rule here, I just try to make it look as much like jagged glass as I can. Don't try to do the whole thing at once, do one part of the window at a time. Once you have the unwanted part of the window selected click the delete key on your keyboard. Do this for all 4 sections of the window.

You should have something similar to this.

10. Once you have the glass the way you like it drag it down under the window frame and lower the opacity to around 30 or below.

11. Make sure you are on your glass layer and Click on Layers/Duplicate. Once you have the glass layer duplicated click on Effects/Plug-in Filters/Simple Offset by 3. If any parts of the glass that doesn't look quite right just use the move tool to get into place.

12. Remember the selection you saved to the alpha channel? Well now you want to load it so click on Selections/Load from Alpha Channel, make sure your frame layer active. Click on Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel and apply the haunt preset. (you might want to do this 2 times)

13. Invert the selection again and click on Effects/3D Effects/Cut out. Use these settings

Add a new layer and apply the cutout again but changing Vertical and Horizontal to -2

And that's it!

Here is my finished image

You can now decorate your window any way you'd like. Have fun with it, add tubes or anything your imagination comes up with! If you'd like to add a reflection like I did with
the candle just duplicate the image, move it into place and lower the opacity to around 15-20.
